The International Academic Symposium on 'East Asian Social Development and Transformation in the Digital-Intelligent Era' Held at Jilin University

The conference was jointly organized by the School of Philosophy and Sociology at Jilin University, the Northeast Revitalization and Development Research Institute of Jilin University, the Northeast and Northeast Asia Research Institute of Jilin University, and the East Asian Social Research Committee of the Chinese Sociological Association. Nearly a hundred renowned scholars from East Asian countries gathered to engage in in-depth discussions on new issues facing East Asian societies amid the wave of digitalization and intelligence.  


The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Bai Gang, Dean of the School of Philosophy and Sociology at Jilin University. Speeches were delivered by Professor Han Xiping, Vice Chairman of the University Council of Jilin University and Dean of the Northeast and Northeast Asia Research Institute and the School of History and Culture; Professor Zhang Yi, Member of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and President of the Chinese Sociological Association; Professor Jang Won-ho, President of the Korean Social Science Research Association and Professor at the University of Seoul; and Professor Bing Zheng, former Executive Vice President of Jilin University, Director of the Northeast Revitalization and Development Research Institute, Vice Chairman of the Academic Committee of the Chinese Sociological Association, Chinese President of the East Asian Sociological Association, and Chairman of the East Asian Social Research Committee of the Chinese Sociological Association. They unanimously emphasized the importance and urgency of East Asian social research in the context of the digital-intelligent era.  


The keynote report session was divided into two parts, chaired by Professor Tian Yipeng from the School of Philosophy and Sociology at Jilin University and Professor Wang Aili, Vice President of the Chinese Sociological Association, respectively. Scholars including former Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Academician Peilin; Honorary Professor Kim Moon-jo from the Department of Sociology at Korea University; Professor Bing Zheng from Jilin University; Researcher Chen Guangjin, former Director of the Institute of Sociology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Professor Bao Zhiming from Guizhou Minzu University; Professor Tian Yipeng from Jilin University; and Associate Professor Feng Qiushi from the National University of Singapore delivered speeches. They shared cutting-edge research findings on topics such as the impact of artificial intelligence on socio-economic logic, re-evaluating Confucian values, sociological methodology in the digital-intelligent era, structural changes in society, modern transformations of social welfare in East Asia, and aging societies.  

In the afternoon, the conference featured three parallel forums, focusing on "New Trends in East Asian Social Development in the Digital-Intelligent Era," "Transformation of East Asian Social Governance in the Digital-Intelligent Era," and "Structural Changes in East Asian Society in the Digital-Intelligent Era." Participating scholars conducted fruitful academic exchanges on topics including urban spaces, remote work, human-machine relationships, collective social work, elite migration, assisted reproductive technology policies, smart elderly care, digital platform and social organization collaboration, digital-intelligent governance, intergenerational support, social structure reshaping, emotional economy, and digital social transformation.

This seminar not only provided a high-level platform for academic exchange among East Asian sociologists, but also offered valuable insights into policy practices and theoretical frameworks for East Asian societies in the digital and intelligent era. All participating scholars agreed that, in response to the profound transformations brought about by digitization and intelligence, East Asian countries should enhance academic dialogue and collaborative research to jointly promote inclusive and sustainable social development.
