Tutorial Programme 2023 (Online) at University of Oxford, UK (10)

author: Xie Yaling Date: 2023-05-04 View:

This course provides an introduction to various perspectives and debates in contemporary social theory, with a focus on American and European thought. We read and discussed the work of a variety of authors, learning both a systematic introduction to the ideas of key theorists, and a balanced assessment of their contributions. Throughout the course, we also used the critical discussion of contemporary social theory as a basis upon which to analyze some social problems today.

Starting with the social theory of everyday life of Goffman and Garfinkel, the course raises the contradiction of structure and actor. It develops like a fight in which restrictions and freedom are always in opposite positions. Modernization just refers to the autonomy under the framework. This course presents the struggle between individuals and structures in a progressive manner, and thereby highlights the essence of modernity and its development.

In the learning process, interactive Q&A sessions encourage us to prepare for material study and on-site English expression. The course develops our analytical skills and intellectual understanding, thereby enabling us to engage in an analysis of theoretical debates in an informed and rigorous

manner.

In conclusion, it improves my critical skills in all aspects which helps me to study sociology better. By comparing my previous work with what I was taught in this journey, I can improve my work and do my best in the future.
